What Are Featured Snippets?
Featured snippets are selected search results that appear in a box at the top of Google's organic results — above the number 1 position. They get 8-12% of all clicks for queries that trigger them.
Snippet Formats
- Paragraph — Direct answer in 40-60 words. Triggered by "what is", "why does" queries.
- List — Numbered or bulleted list. Triggered by "how to", "steps to", "best" queries.
- Table — Comparison or data table. Triggered by "vs", "comparison", "pricing" queries.
How to Optimize
- Answer the query directly — Include a concise 40-60 word answer immediately after the relevant H2
- Use the right format — Match the snippet format Google already shows for that query
- Structure with H2/H3 — Google extracts snippets from clearly headed sections
- Include lists and tables — Formatted content is easier for Google to extract
- Already rank on page 1 — Most snippets come from top 10 results
